Also, I am a sculptor so I think three dimensionally. I have a painted him as Gromit and made a suit of armour for him in stainless steel, and have given him a standard flying at his side. To add life to this, I have written a short children’s story which tells the story of how Gromit, a humble medieval blacksmith saved Queen Guinevere from an evil tyrant and was knighted. We love the idea of small quaint English villages, so we incorporated this into our design to reflect the size of the sculpture. On one side we have a sleepy village with hot air balloons adorning the skies, on the other, we have the explanation for this with the giant monster releasing the balloons into the atmosphere. We also wanted to include some nods to the Wallace & Gromit world – see if you can spot them! Sponsor: Business West - Business West is one of the key chambers and business organisations in the country, helping to make the region one of the best places to work, live and operate in business. http://www.businesswest.co.uk 41: Malago - Broadmead The basis for our ‘Malago’ Gromit design celebrates Bristol’s rich history owed to its famous rivers. Its flowing illustrative style graphically represents the movement and energy associated with a river and its impact on the community. Working in Bedminster, I wanted to design a submission that was reflective of the area. The river Malago runs through Bedminster from the Avon. The word ‘Beydd’ was used to describe how people would use the river, and it is believed that this is where the name, Bedminster originates from. This interesting story, combined with the fact that the Avon has such an important role in Bristol’s heritage, inspired me to create our ‘Malago’ Gromit. The graphic illustration is representative of the unique street art which Bristol is so famous for and the blues also nods to the famous Bristol Blue. Sponsor: John James Bristol Foundation - John James Bristol Foundation is a grant making trust established through the philanthropy of Bedminster born John James. John was one of the most successful businessmen in post war Britain and today his Foundation makes grants which largely benefit Bristol residents in the areas of education, health and the elderly. http://www.johnjames.org.uk 42: Ship Shape and Bristol Fashion - Clifton Suspension Bridge I moved to Bristol three years ago and fell in love with the place! I wanted my design to represent that, and show the interesting, fun and unique side to the city. I have been illustrating landmarks in Bristol for some time now, I find the architecture beautiful and classic, and a dream to draw, and I think displaying that on a Bristol institution, Gromit, would be a great fit! My design shows just some of the wonderful reasons why Bristol is a fantastic place to live. Sponsor: Bristol City Council - Bristol City Council delivers a wide range of public services including Health and Social Care, Housing, Education, Transport Management, Waste Collection and Recycling, Community Safety, Planning, Environmental Services and Culture and Leisure Facilities. http://www.bristol.gov.uk 43: Golden Gromit - Victoria Rooms My design is inspired by golden Buddhas in Thailand, where sculptures are transformed into objects of vibrancy and glory by covering them entirely in gold mosaic. I wanted to turn Gromit into a highly decorative piece of sculpture using gold mosaic tesserae, creating an object of pride, splendour and beauty. The piece is also inspired by the success and legacy of the London Olympic Games where post boxes were painted gold in the home towns of medallists, elevating a simple object into something memorable and a source of pride. The design also plays on Bristol’s connection with pirates and the idea of gold treasure. Mosaic glass both absorbs and reflects light creating an element of movement, shimmer and sparkle within the sculpture. This is a piece which people will want to explore and admire. It’s a colourful design aimed at bringing a bit of fun to passers-by and perhaps inspiring them to go on their own fantastical journey. Everything has to have a starting point, a blueprint, from the SS Great Britain to Techno Trousers. This is my attempt to reflect that, and also to guess how Gromit works. Sponsor: Crest Nicholson - Crest Nicholson is an award-winning developer, who redeveloped the area formerly known as Canon’s Marsh into the vibrant Harbourside in 2005. http://www.crestnicholson.com 47: Grant's Gromit - Ashton Court Gromit is painted with the markings of a Grants Zebra, the smallest of six subspecies of the Plains Zebra. The natural habitat of the baboon is under threat from deforestation as is their population from the meat trade, and they are hunted as a pest. And yet they were considered sacred by the Ancient Egyptians. The mandrill is also a comical animal with its peculiar brightly coloured face and funny facial expressions. Mandrills also share a lot in common with our friend Gromit, having long, dog-like muzzles and close-set eyes. I imagined Gromit exploring these woodlands with his inquisitive nose, discovering animals, birds, insects, plants and flowers of all kinds – including the rare and native Bristol Onion plant, the Bristol Rockcress and the Bristol Whitebeam in both berry form and flower – all of which I have incorporated in my design. It is a celebration of nature and also a nod to the future to continue the great conservation work and care of the landscape, protecting animals under threat such as the bumblebee, red squirrel, badger and fox populations, many bird species and wildflower. Let’s nurture nature together. I wanted to explore producing a piece of work incorporating these passions, which tessellate across Gromit’s recognisable and iconic form. I selected some of my favourite British birds to jigsaw together, playing with the structural shapes to form a whole covering. The artwork utilizes a colour palette based on the vibrant, celebratory hues of our spring and summer. To portray the great Vincent Van Gogh in Gromit form is not only a tribute to him and his legacy, but I hope it is an inspiration to adults and children alike to look now and again at the world through “Vincent’s eyes”. It’s probably the best decision I’ve made. The city has so much to offer creatively and I’ve been amazed by the wealth of talent in both art and music. A seasonal BBQ and Grill situated on Bristol’s waterside. http://www.spyglassbristol.com 71: Canis Major - Hotel du Vin Bristol My design has been inspired by stargazing in Brandon Hill Park, and the idea of animals as constellations. I have recently been producing work based on Ursa Minor and Ursa Major – the Great Bear and the Little Bear, and this led me to want to give Gromit his own constellation. The sculpture is painted like the night sky, covered in stars, small planets, rockets and satellites. Gromit is also covered in constellations and these are mapped out with lines. All the constellations are those that can be seen from Bristol in July and August, and they are named on the sculpture, so that passers-by can spot them all. In addition there is an extra constellation – GROMITUS MAJOR, for people to find. Sponsor: Hotel du Vin Bristol - Hotel du Vin is housed in the restored Sugar House, dating from 1700. It has 40 bedrooms, an award-winning bistro, court yard and private bar. http://www.hotelduvin.com 72: Five a Day Dog - Henleaze Road I wanted to create a fun, striking and decorative design inspired by the ‘five a day’ national guidelines on eating fruit and veg. This is something most of us identify with, particularly when raising children. The Italian renaissance artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo painted portraits of people using only the shapes of fruit and veg. And so, in his footsteps, I have created a design that I believe translates well to the 3D contours of Gromit’s body. The inspiration for this design is based on Gromit – Wallace & Gromit are known as being inventors and I think Wallace might try to clone Gromit in metal, and he would use nuts and bolts for the design. Brunel’s Clifton Suspension Bridge is a metal structure held together with nuts and bolts, and Brunel is at the heart of Bristol’s industrial history. Sponsor: Network Rail - Network Rail runs, maintains and develops Britain's rail tracks, signalling, bridges, tunnels, level crossings, viaducts and key stations. Sponsor: Unum - Unum is a UK provider of Income Protection, which pays a replacement income for people unable to work due to long-term illness or injury. http://www.unum.co.uk 75: Patch - Clifton Hill Colour and pattern are important parts of my work as a children’s illustrator, so I wanted to bring both of those into my design. My initial idea was to create a big Gromit soft toy, but drawing on my love of crafts led me to the patchwork idea. It meant I could introduce a different level to the sculpture because some swatches relate to the Wallace & Gromit films, whilst others are purely aesthetic. I wanted people to enjoy studying the patchwork, pick their favourite squares and locate certain characters from the films. Overall I wanted it to be bright, engaging and fun!
